Tips for Traveling With Pets
This article should be more accurately titled, "Tips for Traveling With Dogs" because so few people would ever remotely consider taking their cats for a road trip. Do visions of clawed up vehicle interiors and a yowling kitty for 1,000 miles spring to mind? So, let's talk dogs. Nearly all dogs are wonderful travelers and they fare much better emotionally by being taken along for the ride instead of left behind where they simply pine and miss you. If you're going to travel with your dog, you're going to need a few things to make his ride safe and comfortable as well as save the interior of your Jeep.
First of all, give him a safe place to ride. A nice, comfy spot in the back of your Jeep with a dog bed of his own to lay on will keep him down and safe. A dog that is jumping from seat to seat is a distraction and worse, if you are in an impact, your canine buddy will be projected forward like a bullet and will run the risk of being seriously injured or even killed. If you love him, secure him. You can use his leash and one of the LATCH hooks in the back that a child's car seat can attach to and you'll keep your dog safe and secure for the ride (not to mention really comfy on his dog bed!).
Next, pit stops for potty breaks are inevitable when you take your pooch along. Never let your dog out without a leash. It may or may not be the law where you are stopping on your road trip; but also even the most well-trained dogs can become spooked and run in a strange place. Don't let your dog be a lost pet statistic. A simple leash will mean the difference between looking for a dog and letting him out to do his business and then back in the Jeep for the rest of the ride. Also, bring along a scooper and bag and dispose of your dog's waste. True, not everyone is polite enough to do it, but you're not like everyone else either.
A portable water and food bowls are a great idea so your dog can stay hydrated and happy along the way!
